OBERWEIS CHALLENGES DURBIN TO COME CLEAN ON IRS CORRESPONDENCE

Illinois Review -

SUGAR GROVE – U.S. Senate candidate Jim Oberweis challenged Dick Durbin to reveal all correspondence he and his staff had with Lois Lerner or anyone else at the IRS from 2010-2013 during the height of the IRS scandal.

Durbin is one of the prime players in the scandal. He and several Democrat colleagues in the Senate badgered the IRS to target conservatives.Durbin and the Senators are the subject of a Senate Ethics complaint filed by the Center for Competitive Politics.

“It’s time to find out exactly how deep Dick Durbin’s claws were in this scandal,” said Oberweis. “He claims he favors transparency so now is his chance to prove it. Let the public see your emails and letters.”

Whether Durbin contacted the IRS is particularly relevant because the rogue agency recently announced that Lois Lerner’s emails were destroyed. Lerner, former director of the IRS’s Exempt Organizations Division, was a key figure in the targeting scandal and has pleaded the Fifth Amendment before Congress.

Durbin bragged in 2010 that he had written a letter asking the IRS to scrutinize a major conservative organization. He has acknowledged that he didn’t ask the IRS to target any liberal organizations but hasn’t revealed whether he had other correspondence with the embattled agency.
