Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner has formed a new political action committee to push term limits for state lawmakers, a move that could provide a financial and strategic assist to his bid for the state’s Executive Mansion.
Documents filed with the State Board of Elections show $205,000 in donations to the PAC so far. That includes $100,000 last week from Howard Rich, a wealthy libertarian-leaning retired real-estate executive who shares many of Rauner’s conservative positions, including school choice and opposition to unions.
Imposing term limits in Illinois will require asking voters to approve a constitutional amendment. To get it on the ballot, hundreds of thousands of signatures will have to be gathered. On Tuesday, Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said that details of the petition drive, as well as the exact wording of the proposed term limit amendment, will be publicly announced “in the next few weeks.”
