Obama summons Senate Democrats to Oval Office after Hill defeat

President Barack Obama held a Saturday afternoon meeting in the Oval Office with top Senate Democrats after a bipartisan group of 52 senators defeated a government-funding bill that he had backed.

The bipartisan rejection contradicts the president’s pitch to the media and the nation that the partial government shutdown is caused only by Republican pursuit of political gain.

The bill only won 45 yes vote. The Democrats’ majority leader, Sen. Harry Reid, voted against the losing bill, because Senate rules say that his no vote allows him to bring the bill up again.
