SPRINGFIELD – Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan says the Tea Party is forcing him to call for a re-vote on a bill to spend $100 million in taxpayer money to sweeten Chicago’s bid for the Obama presidential library.
Last week while on break between hearings, Democrats on the House Executive Committee voted to pass the measure while their Republican colleagues were not present. They then recorded the vote as “unanimous.”
Caught by the media, Madigan is now blaming the Tea Party for Republican committee spokesman Ed Sullivan’s defiant comments about the unexpected vote.
“Some of our Republican friends decided to demonstrate their tea party gene because the word Obama was mentioned,” Madigan spokesman Steve Brown told Sun-Times Lynn Sweet. “So the committee will meet again on the 30th and there will be another vote on the bill.”
“Prior to this little wave of tea party that flushed through Illinois since last week,” said Brown, “I was unaware of any real opposition.”
